The Texas Department of Public Safety requires an four-hour classroom course. Beware of instructors offering a "short  course," that is illegal. After the classroom instruction, a 25-question written exam will be given. Class is from 10:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. with an hour break for lunch. Range qualification will be scheduled for the following day or a convenient time for you, thus it is not necessary to bring your pistol or protective equipment to class.

The course of fire consists of firing 50 rounds from three different distances: 3 yd., 7 yd., and 15 yd. The test is timed and graded for accuracy. Very importantly, each student must be capable of safe and confident operation of their weapons. The required course of fire is conducted on the range located in Bracken. You will find this to be a safe, but low-key event. A passing score is usually easy to achieve. There is no requirement to reload rapidly, thus there is no stress on those who are less proficient or handicapped. The course of fire can be scheduled at a time that is convenient for you. You will need a pistol .32 cal or greater) and 50  rounds of ammunition, or let me know if  you want me to provide them.

Renewals are conducted entirely on line now. No classroom or range recertification is required. If you would like to schedule a refresher course for your marksmanship skills or learn about the new laws since Sept. 1, 2013, please call.

Look over the eligibility requirements carefully, application fees to the TXDPS are non-refundable.
